My Statement

I'm currently a second year Art and Design student at the Wigan School for the arts, specialising in textiles. My experience as an Art and Design student has allowed me to develop and express a personal and unique creative view of life, taking this into my practical work, and exploring all creative processes. I love to express myself within my work through the range of media exploration in colour, shape which creates compositions and patterns and ranges of different texture, materials and different applique stitching techniques as you may gather with the images I have posted onto this blog. I also have my own personal blog attached on this account, this can be found at: http://textilefashionister.blogspot.com/ .

Additionally, within my spare time I like to visit art exhibitions contemporary, historical and locally, looking for inspiration around me to prepare myself for the next set of work in which I will then produce, I enjoy getting involved in volunteer projects, such as 'Orange Rockcorps'.I have worked as a sales assistant at Topshop for over a year and still enjoy working there within a team and also being in an environment, where I see the latest fashion trends on a day to day basis.

Furthermore, the reason I have chosen the course is because I wish to develop the skills I already have as an art and design student and to learn new skills and techniques in a specialist area where I will enjoy researching both historical and contemporary fashion and textile designers, I am looking forward to new, challenging experiences at university, and would relish the opportunity to take my current studies further. My ambition, after graduation, is to learn through working in teams and with different people, by hopefully becoming a designer within the fashion industry.

Observational study work for colour theory and observational drawing.

I have visually observed and studied clothing hung up on a washing line, this allowed me to use a range of skills from obsertvational drawing, mixing correct colours, controlling my media, and to gain further understanding of colour theory through the use of complementary colour schemes.

The deconstructed garment I produced to represent both a new and old 'Collection'.

This garment shows my creativity in textiles as I have taken a 1960's style blouse, reconstructed this by machine stitch of lace and beads to show my mother's family history of lace wedding dresses. I have put my own ideas into this by creating a repeated pattern from my applique stitched fabrics to show a new garment inspired by both old and new.
This piece has also been influenced by Vivienne Westwood's wacky ideas.

Development work for the pattern which was processed onto my deconstructed garment

The surface piece I produced representing 'self' influenced by my heritage

Surface piece representing 'Self' through experimental shapes

The mixed media composition samples were created to produce ideas for surface pieces within the 'self' project

A sample booklet of compositional shapes to develop my ideas for my 'deconstruction' project

Compositions showing different shapes, type and some use of formal elements, these were produced in my first year on the art and design course

This A2 piece shows skills of stitch, shapes and a colour scheme what blends well together to create a composition from images I viewed through a viewfinder, taken from an abstract 3D box composition which I had designed previously.

My development samples leading up to my final piece for the 'self' project, these are working ideas to inform surface design outcomes

I always find it usefull to annotate all my work throughout a project, this allows me to investigate media and design outcomes, explain and develop a deeper understanding of the design process. It also offers me the time to assess the successes of my developments.

Sketchbook appliqued pieces showing development towards my 'Self' project

These two pieces use an assortment of material and media to explore surfaces and texture, this allowed me to investigate ideas through development. It also offered opportunity to create outcomes from different sources of materials that had a sense of self, within this I used bold stitch influenced by Tracey Emin, to outline and bring further attention to detail of the personal images.

A machine stitched piece within my sketchbook influenced by the 'Self' project

This sketchbook page was influenced by Claire Heminsley, I have machine stitched onto the back creating a reversed effect , on an assortment of old papers to create an image and pattern, this was influenced by a previous study using a viewfinder. By doing this I found that it gave me the opportunity to recreate exciting recycled images.

Life Drawing Study

I have drawn out in HB pencil the male figure and developed the tonal ranges on the body, I did this by using gouache paint and applying this in a block effect, this shows tonal range and is influenced by Euan Uglow.
